Week 4 - Stuck in 3rd Gear

Sometimes progress is slow. Week 4 is upon us, I am scheduled to move in in 10 days, and it feels like I am spending a thousand dollars a day. This is the low spot of the project and being an American, I must look for the silver lining (a Swiss colleague recently pointed out that "all Americans believe in the silver lining, whereas in Switzerland, gold is better. That's it.").

Silver lining :: The 505 looks better than it did when I started this project. In my opinion. Others may disagree, but I saw the refinished floors tonight and they look flat out sexy. Yes, floors can be sexy.

Some accomplishments ::

Over the last week the bathroom was completely gutted - just a slight scope creep considering the bathroom was no where in the original project plan. And once Christian pulled out 4 inches of flooring, and I ripped out all of the walls, including 1937 New York Times newspaper used as wallpaper, the bathroom had to be rebuilt. It has been rebuilt and now it is time for tiling. Anyone have a good tile man or woman? Experience required.

95% of the electrical and plumbing is finished. I am rather stoked on 2 counts: 1) the electrical inspection passed. I can't say that for the original electrical work. 2) the plumbing repairs included copper pipes in the bathroom - a major plus considering the pitiful plastic pipes that someone had installed previously. And the plumbing came in under budget even after I added additional work.

About 80% of the lighting has been installed. A few items are on order. West Elm has become my best friend when it comes to lighting.

Painting is nearly finished. The bathroom and stairwell have to be completed yet, and there is some touch up required after the flooring guys came through with 800 pound machines. But here's a sneak peek at what the Spanish coast looks like in the 505.

The living room looks a lot better without all of the tools and stuff. It is going to be one cozy space when finished.

The crown moulding install has stalled. (Haha.) Christian has purchased a new mitre tool, however, and it promises to get us back on track and moving more efficiently going forward.

This will be the master bedroom. It's hard to tell right now or in a picture, but the new crown moulding is much bolder than the old stuff. It's about 1 1/2 inches wider, and is set at an angle. The bathroom door isn't usually in the master bedroom. This is a result of my scope creep...bathroom still isn't put back together.

In the kitchen, Christian has framed out the arch detail that is above the future range. It will hide the mechanics of the chimney hood vent once I am able to make that purchase. (Note: This is another low of the week. Vent hoods, fancy or not, are not inexpensive. So when you've torn apart your bathroom, you give up the hood when it is not required by code because you purchased an insanely expensive electrical range oven.)

Again, this is one of those details that has very little presence in a picture, but a lot of value in a 30 square foot kitchen. It is not symmetrical, you may be thinking to yourself and you would be correct. Nothing is symmetrical, flat or at a 90 degree angle in this house. So the design decision was to be purposefully asymmetrical (like the fireplace that is nearly 2 inches wider on the right side which makes laying tile very difficult - a more in depth story to come when the fireplace tile is installed).

I'm really partial to having the toilet in the kitchen-dining area. It's next to the future bar top, so it becomes a rather convenient item when drinking in plethora.

What's in store for week 4 ::

Refinishing of the hardwood floors
Install and stain the new stair treads in the stairwell
Install the new back door
Get a bid to replace the leaking transom window
Touch up paint throughout
Install crown moulding and touch up throughout
Tile the tub and floors in the bathroom
Finish knee wall and sink wall in kitchen
Cabinet arrival and install

Week 5 is going to be big ::

Overflow of week 4
Paint the bathroom
Reinstall the bathroom fixtures
Arrival of kitchen appliances
Install kitchen sink and plumbing
Install shelving in closets
Install fireplace tiles

Anything else we can squeeze in because I move in at the end of week 5!
